    New ranges for 2011

  • New Ranges & Artists for 2012
  • We are delighted to announce that we have now been in our new larger gallery premises for just over seven years.
We only moved a few yards across the green, but we now have a much better opportunity to display the fabulous range of Arts & Crafts in our new surroundings.
Although we were sad to leave our original hayrack behind, the new building is of the same period and still retains some of the original characteristics that we love.
We will continue to offer quality and value. Our current artists all feature in the new gallery, many with an extended range of products. Cherry and I, will also be on the lookout for new artists and new ranges to compliment our current Arts & Crafts.

Cherry and I have continued to choose work which will expand the ranges we have on offer in the gallery.

It is not possible to include everything we have at the gallery on our website, although we will always try to show as comprehensive a selection as possible.

If you would like to visit us at the gallery you will always be made very welcome, and you will be able to see our current ranges and discuss what else we may have planned for the future.

Jean Coales hand decorated art deco inspired pottery

  • Jean Coales - Ceramic Artist
  • Contemporary Art Deco Inspired Pottery

Jean produces a range of art deco inspired, hand decorated pottery from her home studio in Northamptonshire.

The pots are produced using liquid slip in moulds, this gives Jean greenware pieces for her to decorate on. The intricate designs are created using a process called tubelining, this is very much like icing a cake. The outlines for all the coloured areas in the design are drawn on by hand before glazes are painted on to fill in the shapes.

Jean's current collection draws on influences from Clarice Cliffe, Moorcroft, and art deco themes in general. These are then given a contemporary twist with the use of colour, design and the overall shape of the piece.

    Charlotte Hupfield - Ceramic Artist

  • Charlotte Hupfield - Ceramic Artist
  • Individually hand-built, sculptural ceramic vases and decorative bowls.

Charlotte Hupfield is a ceramic artist based in Northamptonshire. Charlotte has recently graduated with a degree in Applied Arts from Coventry University. The collection of work we have is representative of her most up-to-date work.

Charlotte has always been attracted to natural surroundings and elemental surfaces. She is genuinely drawn to landscape, in particular beaches following a visit to Cornwall.

"Whilst concealed amongst these surroundings, I felt relaxed and at home. I find it amazing to see the changes in rocks and coves on the beach caused by weathering and erosion from the sea. It is this particular aspect that my ceramics connect to."

Each piece of Charlotte's work has a very tactile surface, you can't help but want to physically relate to the piece aswell as admiring it's visual qualities.

Nature plays a large part in her designs, each piece although being hand-built has a very organic quality.

Pat Clarke fantasy & imagination painter

  • Pat Clarke Fantasy Painter
  • Contemporary Painter of Fantasy & Imagination

A trained painter, Pat has only recently started to paint again seriously. This follows several years away from her easel working in restoration, she specialized in Chinese and Japanese lacquer work.

Pat's return to painting coincided with her moving to the Isle of Wight, where she has found inspiration for her painting, and has fully imersed herself in the local arts events and exhibitions.

Pat enjoys working on her decorative fantasy pictures. The paintings always start with an idea lightly sketched onto the paper, everything else that happens from this point just evolves naturally, without following a rigid plan. Pat says of her work, "I like the way the snakes can break up a picture, adding to the patchwork quality. The repetitive flower pattern motifs give a look of fabric or embroidery. Occasionally ther is a simple message in the work, but mostly the viewers make up their own stories, or try to place the subjects".

The original paintings that these prints are taken from, are all in watercolour with gold and silver inks. In some cases bronzing powder in lacquer, and an occasional use of glitter to pick up the light are used. Pat puts her use of gold down to her years of restoration work.

Since 2005 Pat has been a member of the Society of Free Painters and Sculptors, an avant-garde group based in London, set up by members of the Institute of Contemporary Art in 1952. She is also a member of the Society for Art of Imagination.

Pat has exhibited in many prestigious venues in both the UK and abroad, and she has had work accepted by both The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, and The Royal Watercolour Society.

We have a range of mounted prints in the gallery, they can be seen in the Paintingsection, under the main Paintings menu at the top of the page.

Bernard Glynn Jones wooden boat sculptures

  • Bernard Glynn Jones - Wooden Boat Sculptures
  • Bernard has a degree in Fine Art from Durham University, and has taught design and ceramics in schools and colleges for over 30 years. Since retiring he has been experimenting with various media including reclaimed and recycled materials, initially to produce two-dimensional images, but later moving into more three-dimensional work. The theme of boat sculptures emerged over time and this is what he now enjoys and concentrates on.

His sculptures vary in size from a metre in length down to a few centimetres the size being dictated mainly by the materials he finds. he can often be observed visiting skips and factory sites looking for suitable materials. Old furniture, gates and fencing for example form a rich supply of hulls and umbrella frames provide an excellent supply of masts. However, he finds much of what we discard can be put to use. The rustier and more damaged, the better.

"Essentially I want my sculptures to be fun but I hope that by using the materials in a witty and imaginative way I can bring out the beauty in much that we throw away".

Julian Spencer - hand gilded wooden clocks

  • Julian Spencer - Gilded Clocks
  • A range of traditionally gilded wooden mantle and wall clocks, hand made by Julian Spencer in Cornwall.

Each clock is cut to size, the wooden surface is then coated with several layers of super-fine plaster called Gesso. The Gesso is used to even out any imperfections or grain in the wood. Once dry and sanded smooth, the next stage is to apply two coats of Boll. Boll is a ceramic bases pigment that seals the Gesso, and acts as an undercoat for the metal leaf to be applied. Before the leaf can be applied, a thin coat od gold-size is brushed onto the surface, the leaf is then applied by hand whilst the size is still tacky. The final finish is crated by a combination of burnishing and antiquing techniques. Each clock is an individual piece, no two are ever exactly alike.

Prices range from 49.95 for the mantle clocks, 59.95 for the long rectangular and square wall clocks, to 64.95 for the disk wall clocks.

    Ruth Lyne contemporary kiln-formed glassware

  • Ruth Lyne - Glass Artist
  • Slumped and Fused Kiln Formed Glassware.

"I have always been intrigued by the natural colours and textures of the sea shore, by the movement of the waves and the ripples left in the sand and by the wide horizons and the surface of the cliffs. Glass allows me to use layers of colour and texture to create an abstract image inspired by these memories. I am very interested in the visual language used in abstract painting and place vertical and horizontal elements to try to instil a sense of calm and balance in the image. I originally used a simple palette of aqua, silver, black and white but I have recently added a new range of vibrant reds and oranges to explore how they change the work. I dont try to recreate the natural world, but I aim to create images that evoke a range of feelings and memories in the viewer and in me."

We currently have a range of dishes, coasters, standing and hanging pieces, all handmade in Ruth's Northamptonshire studio.

Alison Reid - fine silver & copper jewellery

  • Alison Reid - Fine Silver & Copper Jewellery
  • All Alison's jewellery is designed and carefully handcrafted in her home studio and workshop in Edinburgh. She enjoys working with a variety of materials, predominantly sterling silver, semi-precious stones, freshwater pearls and beautiful lampwork beads.

Some of the pieces we are stocking are made with Silver Art Clay, which is a silver product made from reclaimed silver. It is manufactured in clay form with tiny particles of fine silver suspended in the clay. Once the item has been moulded and carved to the desired form it is fired, the clay burns away and the fine silver particles bind together to form .999% silver. It's a fantastic, versatile material to work with. We also have pieces that Alison has made in copper using the same art clay technique.

Each piece is individually hand crafted.

    Lynne Lane dichroic glass jewellery

  • Lynne Lane - Dichroic Glass Jewellery
  • Lynne first became interested in silver smithing about 12 years ago, attending courses at the local arts centre in Great Linford in Buckinghamshire. Over the years she has developed her ranges of jewellery and household objects.
Five years ago Lynne studied production techniques in kiln fired glass. Since then she has attended various workshops and courses, all the time gaining a little more of an insight into the properties and possibilities of glass.

Over the last two years, Lynne has specialised in using dichroic glass for her jewellery.

Dichroic glass is formed when very thin layers of quartz crystal and metal oxides are vaporised on to the surface of clear or black glass. This is done in a highly technical vacuum deposition process, which was originally developed for the space industry.
The characteristics of this glass are, that it has a transmitted colour (the colour you see through the glass if the coating is on clear glass), this is different from the reflected colour (the colour you see when light is bounced off the glass). These colours can shift depending on the angle at which it is viewed.
There are over 45 different coloured coatings available on both clear and black glass, including some patterned and some textured. By combining different finishes the end result produces a unique piece of work.

    Neil Chanter contemporary landscape photography

  • Neil Chanter - Contemporary Landscapes
  • Neil developed a keen power of observation of nature during over 30 years as a microbiologist developing vaccines and diagnostics to prevent animal diseases. His interest in natural observation also expressed itself through the hobby of photography, begun as many years ago using a Zenit EM 35mm film camera. Eventually the draw of the hobby overcame the early profession and he switched to full time photography.

Being in the right place at the right time and sensing what level is needed to interact with the subject to achieve the best pictures is the key to how he has produced beautiful images whether for the living room wall, gallery or wedding and portrait albums. This means getting the right blend of friendliness and quietness - to interact but at the quietest level to get the picture.

A selection of Neil's work can be seen in his section under the main 'Photos' menu at the top of the page.

    Onya bags

  • Onya Bags
  • Bright, vibrant, fun and an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic carrier bags.

A re-useable bag for the 21st century for everybody. It can be used for shopping, going to the gym, going to school or college and even as a fun alternative to your briefcase.

Designed and developed by brothers Daniel & Jon Brousson as a contemporary alternative to plastic carrier bags.

The bags are made from recycled parachute fabric, this was chosen because it is almost as light as plastic but is far stronger. The bags are designed to carry up to 12kg, equal to four times the amount of a standard supermarket carrier bag and have a capacity of 14.7 litres.

Onya Bags come attached to their own carrying pouch and hanging clip. This helps you to keep the bag tidy when not being used, and by clipping it onto a handbag or keyring you will always have it "onya".

The bags are available in a wide range of colours to suit all tastes.

You can see the range we have in stock in the Onya bag section under the main 'Gifts' menu.

The environmental issue raised by these bags has been featured in several national publications such as The Observer Magazine, The Guardian newspaper and the BBC's Good Food magazine. In October 2006, it was highlighted as an alternative to plastic carrier bags during a discussion on BBC Radio 2's Jeremy Vine show.

We are now stocking all four bags from the Onya Bag range; a backpack which is called Onya Back, a satchel style bag called Onya Side, the original Onya Bag and the new for 2009 a large version of the original Onya bag. All bags and their storage pouches are made from recycled parachute material.

Two extra items from the Onya Bag range are also now in stock. Onya Weigh is to use to buy your fruit and veg. Dump It Onya is for the environmentally aware dog owners, collect and dispose of dog mess in a 100% biodegradable bag.

The boys at Onya Bags have teamed up with manufacturers of re-usable/re-cycled products, who are like-minded with their ethical approach to business. They have recently introduced a new product designed in the USA, a re-usable alternative to a daily sandwich bag. Wrap-n-Mat is a re-usable sandwich wrap and placemat in one, and is available in a choice of colours.

All products can be found in the Onya Bags section, under the main 'Unique Gifts' menu.

Hand crafted stained glass overlay mirrors

  • Green Eye Stained Glass Mirrors
  • A range of mirrors, hand craftedin Leicestershire using the stained glass overlay technique. The colourful designs are inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, but have been given a modern twist by designer and craftsman Dylan Lawson.

The business was originally started by Dylan's father in the highlands of Scotland. The family still produce mirrors and windows there, but Dylan decided to move south and creates this range in his own workshop.

The stained glass overlay technique incorporates the fixing of coloured mylar sheet to a glass mirror, and the design is then created around it using a lead tape. This technique has a strength in using a single sheet of glass rather than many smaller pieces fixed together, and gives the designer an almost limitless choice of design options.

We stock a range of round, square and oblong mirrors ranging in price from 9.95 to 39.95. Designs include tulips, roses, bluebells, snowdrops, peonies and the scotish thistle.

Fused and slumped glass by Joanne Taylor

  • Callulah Glass by Joanne Taylor
  • Callula Glass, by Designer-Maker Joanne Taylor, features collections of geometrically inspired, decorative and functional glassware for the contemporary home. Bold palettes form themed colourways, which are regularly refreshed to reflect key seasonal interior trends. Collections include several pieces which are designed to work individually or mixed and matched in a room setting. Each piece is unique, tactile and collectable.

Modern interior and graphic design, as well as historical design movements, particularly the linear style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the grid formations of the De Stijl movement, influence Joanne. Inspiration is also taken from the intricate details which make up a familiar object; something that you may only notice by zooming in close.

Joanne prides herself on the high quality finish of her work, which she achieves through fastidious planning of each part of the process. Designs begin life as mood boards of colour schemes, followed by a series of sketches before the glass is cut and shaped by hand, cleaned, and assembled in the kiln ready for a series of fusing and slumping programmes.

Callula is a Latin name, meaning little beauty which is the pre-requisite for each design.

We stock a range of bowls, dishes, coasters and candle holders in two of Joanne's new 2011 colour pallets.
